Hey there, I'm Liam, your friendly neighborhood fluffy Bernedoodle, and I'm super excited to tell you all about my breed!
I’m a Bernedoodle — a happy mix between a big, loyal Bernese Mountain Dog and a super-smart, curly-coated Poodle. The very first Bernedoodles like me were intentionally created back in 2003 by a kind breeder in Canada named Sherry Rupke. She wanted to take the sweet, gentle giant personality of the Bernese and combine it with the cleverness and low-shedding coat of the Poodle.
The goal? To make a healthier, longer-lived companion who’s perfect for snuggling on the couch or going on adventures with the family. That’s exactly what I am! I’ve got the calm, loving heart of my Bernese side and the playful, quick-learning brain of my Poodle side. Most days you’ll find me being a total goofball — zooming around with my toys one minute and then flopping over for belly rubs the next. We Bernedoodles are known for being incredibly affectionate, gentle with kids, and great with other pets. We love attention, cuddles, and being part of the family pack.
My coat? It’s that famous teddy-bear fluff — soft, wavy or curly, and way less shedding than a lot of other dogs. Plus, I come in all sorts of beautiful colors, including the classic tri-color markings that make people stop and say “Aww!”
Whether I’m learning new tricks (I’m pretty smart, thanks to my Poodle genes!), exploring on a harness walk, or just being your loyal shadow around the house, life as a Bernedoodle is pretty pawsome. We’re goofy, loyal, sensitive, and full of love — basically the best combination of two amazing breeds rolled into one big fluffy package.

Many people wonder why Bernedoodles like me can make wonderful service dogs. Here’s why we’re often such great candidates:
We combine the calm, gentle, and loyal nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog with the high intelligence, eagerness to please, and quick learning of the Poodle. This mix gives us a balanced temperament — we’re affectionate and patient without being overly hyper, yet smart enough to master complex tasks and stay focused in public.
Bernedoodles tend to be:
- Highly trainable and responsive to positive reinforcement
- Naturally gentle and good with people of all ages
- Eager to work and form strong bonds with our handler
- Adaptable in different environments once properly socialized
- Less likely to shed heavily, which can be helpful for some handlers
Of course, not every Bernedoodle becomes a service dog — it takes the right individual puppy, extensive training, and a good match with their handler. But our breed’s blend of steady temperament and sharp mind makes many of us excellent potential partners for tasks like mobility support, psychiatric service work, allergy alert, or simply providing calm companionship in daily life.
